what is poly-fil low loft batting

Fairfield Poly-Fil Low-Loft Batting

  • Smooth, even surface lets your quilting lines take center stage, perfect for art quilts, whole-cloth quilts, and traditional stitch definition
  • Lightweight and breathable so finished pieces feel structured and warm without bulk or stiffness
  • Bonded construction prevents shifting, clumping, and bearding (fibers poking through fabric) for a neat, lasting finish
  • Works for both hand and machine quilting with a recommended quilting distance of 2″–4″
  • Machine-washable and quick-drying — retains its loft over time with minimal fuss
  • Hypoallergenic and safe for all makers, including baby quilts and everyday-use projects

Fairfield Toasty Cotton Batting

  • Low loft (~3/16″) creates a smooth, flat surface that showcases stitch work beautifully, ideal for detailed quilting designs and artistic pieces
  • Needlepunched with a synthetic scrim for added strength and stability without sacrificing softness — no bunching or distortion as you quilt
  • Easy to needle through for both hand and machine quilting, with a generous recommended quilting distance of up to 8″
  • No pre-soaking needed — ready to use straight out of the package
  • Machine-washable with minimal shrinkage (only 2–3%) so finished projects hold up beautifully over time

  • Made in the USA from 100% natural cotton

what is quilter's 80/20 batting

Fairfield Quilters 80/20 Batting

  • 80% cotton, 20% polyester blend delivers the best of both — cotton’s natural warmth and breathability with polyester’s added softness and resilience
  • Low loft (3/16″) produces a flat, smooth surface with great stitch definition — a favorite among hand quilters who want clean, visible quilting lines
  • Smooth drape and classic appearance give finished quilts a traditional, gently antique look ideal for heirloom-style projects and throws
  • Needlepunched for strength so stitches glide through easily whether you’re working by hand or machine, with a recommended quilting distance of 2″–4″
  • Won’t beard, shift, or gather inside the quilt layers, keeping your finished project looking neat over time
  • No pre-soaking needed — ready to use right out of the package

How to choose

Still not sure? Think about what your finished project needs to do, and let that lead you.

You want cozy, puffy warmth:  Reach for Hi-Loft. It’s the fullest, loftiest option in the lineup and was made for comforters, duvets, and tied quilts where you want maximum plush.

You want a traditional quilted look with visible stitch work:  Quilters 80/20 or Toasty Cotton are your friends. Both have a low, flat profile that lets your quilting lines do the talking — especially beautiful for hand quilting. The 80/20 adds a slight polyester resilience, while Toasty Cotton gives a fully natural drape.

You’re a beginner making your first quilt:  Start with Extra-Loft. Its medium thickness makes it easier to handle and gives satisfying texture without being too thick to needle through — whether you’re working by hand or machine.

You’re making garments or wearables:  Low-Loft polyester, Toasty Cotton, and Quilters 80/20 all work well in clothing. They add warmth without bulk, lay flat inside seams, and are gentle on the skin.

You care about sustainability:  Project Fleece is the only batting in the lineup made from 100% recycled polyester. It’s a dense, structured material with a felt-like feel — ideal for structured crafts like tote bags, placemats, and modern wall hangings.

One final note about which batting is right for your project

Every Fairfield batting is made in the USA, hypoallergenic, and washable once quilted, ensuring that wherever your project takes you, care and quality are already built in. The only real question is: what do you want your quilt to feel like? Start there, and let the batting follow.
