In my sewing life-time, I have created one Cathedral Window project. It was a small pin cushion I created at the request if of one of my editor’s at the time. And it was a last minute request to boot. Somehow I pulled it off, but it was extremely challenging. So, I have decided to once again try the Cathedral Window technique but not before doing my research. I searched the web for some easier and simpler ways to tackle Cathedral Windows. Let me share some great tutorials with you.
Head over to gogokim for a great tutorial for making a pin cushion. Small projects like this one can be a great place to start before tackling larger items such as quilts or even pillows. She has a complete tutorial with step by step photos that will have you creating cathedral window blocks in record time.
Obsessive Crafting Disorder admits to being obsessed with cathedral windows but “too much of a slacker” to go about it the traditional way. So she created a cheater method of creating a gorgeous quilt. Her method is a lot like making rag quilts, which is a heck of a lot easier than making a cathedral window block.
A La Mode shares a cool technique for making the cathedral windows shown here in this pillow in a step by step photo tutorial. They compare it to origami folding which makes it a lot less intimidating and easier to understand.
I really enjoyed all the faux cathedral window projects I saw, including this faux pincushion cathedral window project by Dairy of a Quilt Maven. This is one I am definitely going to try. The step out photos are fantastic and very east to understand. Her method uses a lot less fabric than the traditional method too.
And speaking of faux, how about a paper crafting version of a cathedral window project. Amy Friend created this project using Basic Grey’s Luscious line.
So have you attempted Cathedral Windows?
