Bayport Homemakers

Paula Link is a member of The Bayport Homemakers which is a women’s organization that has been around for 70 years. They make underarm comfort pillows for mastectomy patients and padded seat belt covers which Velcro around a seat belt so a breast cancer patient can wear a seat belt in a car. They deliver these products to the 2 major cancer centers here on Long Island, New York. They are Memorial Sloan Kettering in Commack, NY and the Carol Baldwin Breast Cancer Center at Stony Brook Hospital. They also give them to the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for breast cancer patients they service. This year they have made 600 sets. Most of the members know someone who has had breast cancer and a number of their group are breast cancer survivors, like Paula. They want women with breast cancer to know that there are women like them who care and want to give comfort to them.

    Dear Homemakers:
My name is Patricia Fuoco and currently reside in a domestic violence shelter that your organization so kindly sent an Easter gift for me.
I can’t begin to tell you how absolutely touched I was when I received your card. On a day when I was feeling down you made me feel not alone. Your thoughtfulness warmed my heart to know that someone out there cares. I hope that with Gods help and people like you, I will be standing on my own two feet in no time. I would love to make the situation I am in right now be a lesson learned and be strong and independent again. Thank you so much.
    Gratefully yours,
    Patricia

Dear Homemakers; I am a recent breast cancer patient and had surgery last week. The Carol Baldwin breast center ambulatory surgery unit gave me a shopping bag containing the comfort pillow and seat belt cover. I was so touched to receive it. Being newly diagnosed is a frightening experience as you all know and the gift from Bayport Homemakers made me feel I was no alone. Thank you so much for your caring, talent and compassion. I am very grateful.
