Instructions

Step One

Cut a 18” diameter circle out of the stiffen material and use that as a template to cut two circles from the black fabric, making sure you cut the black fabric about ¼ inch bigger all around. Place the Stiffen in between the two pieces of black fabric and sew together using ¼ inch seam allowance.

Step Two

Create the template for the cone of the hat by printing all the pieces and taping them together. Fold another piece of the Stiffen in half and use template to cut a piece for the cone. Now use that piece of stiffen as a template to cut the black fabric but leave an extra ½ inch of black fabric on the bottom edge. Iron Stiffen to fabric following fusing instructions. Fold over the bottom piece of fabric and sew using a ¼ inch seam allowance. Now fold into a cone shape with the stiffen side out and sew together along the side edge. Turn right side out.

Step Three

Trace bottom of cone shape onto the bottom of the hat brim. Cut a circle in the center of the cone shape you just traced and then make slits from the inner circle to the outer circle stopping about ½ inch from the outer circle. Trim off the pieces. Flip over and use a hot glue gun to attach the cone to the center of the brim.

Step Four

Use a piece of orange fabric or ribbon to create a band and glue to the base of the cone.

Variations:

You can sew designs onto the cone or brim before you sew it together.

You can use your own creativity to embellish the hat to match your decor.

The same pattern can be used for a witch or wizard hat. You could also make it in white for a “good” witch hat.
