Rainbow Pinata Fringe Pillow

Categories: Decor, Pillow, Oly*Fun

This Rainbow Pinata Fringe Pillow is perfect for summer celebrations. While you can whack it and get candy, you can get comfortable and festive. This pillow is made with a rainbow of OlyFun, but you can use any colors you desire. This is a gift for my eldest niece who is off to college in a few months. It’s oversized and colorful, which is great for dorm decor. Fringe is a huge design trend currently, but traditional fringe is very delicate. OlyFun doesn’t fray, cuts like paper and is durable, making it perfect for a fringed pillow. I used Poly-Fil Fiber Fill stuffing, but this project can be adjusted to fit any of the Pillow Forms.

Instructions

Step One

Using the clear quilting ruler and pencil, draft out one 25″ x 6.5″ rectangle from Cherry Pop, Orange Crush, Lemon Drop, Clover, Sky Blue, Blueberry, and Jelly. Draft two 4″ x 25″ rectangles from Bubble Gum. Draft a 25″ x 25″ square from Jelly. Cut all pieces out with fabric scissors. Set one Bubble Gum rectangle and the Jelly square aside.

Step Two

With the clear drafting ruler and pencil, draw a line along the middle lengthwise, of each OlyFun rectangle, except Bubble Gum. For the bubblegum, draw a length line, 3″ up. With scissors, cut fringe about 1/2″ wide, up to that drawn line. I found it’s faster to fold a rectangle in fourths, and cutting the fringe through the layers. My fringe isn’t exactly the same for each rectangle, which makes this project much easier to cut.

Step Three

Start with the non-fringed Bubble Gum rectangle and fringed Jelly rectangle. Overlap the Jelly fringe section 1″ over the Bubble Gum rectangle top. Use straight pins to secure. Load the sewing machine with purple thread. Straight stitch down the middle of the overlapped sections.

Repeat for each fringe, overlapping a new fringe rectangle with the previous fringe’s top. Change the thread color to match the new fringe. Line up the last fringe, Bubblegum, top edge with the top edge of the previous, Cherry Pop, top edge, and sew together with pink.

Step Four

Lay the Jelly square on top of the fringe panel. Straight pin around the sides. With purple thread, straight stitch around 3.5 sides, 1/2″ from the edge. Leave a 12″ gap. Trim the corners diagonally, making sure not to cut through the thread. Turn the pillowcase inside out through that gap. Shape the corners with your fingers or a pointed small object, like a chopstick.

NOTE: If you’re using a pillow form, leave the 4th side completely open.

Step Five

Stuff the pillow with as much Poly-Fil stuffing as desired. I’ve found that too much stuffing makes for a hard dense pillow and too little makes for a flat slouchy pillow.

NOTE: If you’re using a pillow form, stuff it inside the pillowcase.

Step Six

Fold in the gap edges, to match the seam. Straight pin closed. Cut a long piece of purple thread. Thread your hand needle. Match the thread ends, and double knot. Stitch the gap closed with an invisible stitch. When you reach the end, double knot your thread into the seam. Push the needle back along the seam about 4″. Pull the needle up. Cut the excess thread. I’ve found that hiding the tail like this makes for a stronger finishing knot and the seam is less likely to reopen.
