Instructions

Step One

Draw a 12″ square on your piece of freezer paper. Using the diagram as a reference, draw the solid black lines. You are drawing on the paper/dull side of the freezer paper. Draw the long diagonal first, then the shorter diagonal in the bottom right corner. Draw the remainder of the solid dark lines (use the lighter grey lines for placement only.)

Cut the freezer paper template apart on the solid lines.

Step Two

Iron each piece of freezer paper to the wrong side of the backing fabric. The paper side is facing up, the shiny side is down. Leave at least a 1/2″ between pieces. Using a rotary cutter and ruler, cut out the backing pieces, adding a 1/4″ seam allowance around all the sides. Remove freezer paper templates. (You can re-use your freezer paper templates several times!)

Iron each piece of freezer paper to the right side of the colored scraps of fabric. The paper side is facing up, the shiny side is down. This time use a different color of fabric for each template piece. Leave at least a 1/2″ around each piece. Using a rotary cutter and ruler, cut out the fabric pieces, adding a 1/4″ seam allowance around all the sides.

Repeat for the fusible fleece. Lightly iron template pieces to the fleece (not adhesive) side of the fusible fleece. You just want to tack it down slightly. Using a rotary cutter and ruler, cut out the fleece pieces. Do not add a seam allowance this time.

Center each corresponding piece of fleece on to the wrong side of the backing fabrics. Fuse to each backing piece, following package directions. You should have a 1/4″ of backing fabric exposed around each piece of fleece.

Step Three

Match up each backing piece with it’s coordinating top piece. Place right sides together. Use a 1/4″ seam allowance and sew around all the sides, leaving a 2-3″ opening on one side. Back stitch when starting and stopping. Do this for all 7 pieces.

Turn each piece right side out through the opening. Use a chopstick or other dull instrument to poke out the corners.

Hand stitch openings closed.

Quilt each puzzle piece as desired.
