Looking for a small project you can make to accompany a mug, coffee shop gift card, or baked casserole gift? This quilted hot pad and mug warmer tutorial is the perfect handmade gift! They’re super easy to make and are totally functional. Who wouldn’t love that?
Use the “Quilted Hot Pad and Mug Warmer” Free Pattern to cut 16 wedge-shaped pieces from the decorative fabric. (This is a great way to use up some of those fabric scraps you just couldn’t bear to throw away!) Sew the edges together until you’ve made a complete circle. Press flat.
Using the included pattern, cut and press the center circle. (Using aluminum foil to encompass the fabric and template as you fold over the edges is the easiest way I know to do this. This method creates nice edges and you can just iron the whole thing!) Sew in place in the center of quilted piece.
Cut circles out of Solarize, craft felt, and back fabric. Layer the fabrics as shown in the picture below. Sew around the edges, making sure to leave a small section open to flip. Turn right side out and press with an iron.
Add the decorative circles and rays top stitching. This tutorial is exactly the same if you’re making the hot pad instead. Just make sure to use the correct pattern pieces.
