OlyFun Jumbo Tassels

Categories: Decor, Oly*Fun

I’ve been in search of easy jumbo tassels, but I could only find paper versions. OlyFun cuts like paper, so it’s perfect for making oversized tassels for parties, garlands, wreaths, or any other decor. These OlyFun jumbo tassels are more durable than paper tassels. They can be used indoors or outdoors without worrying about the weather. I chose colors that fit my home decor. You can make these in any of the 18 OlyFun and 4 Metallic OlyFun colors. I used Brick, Pine, Twilight, Jelly, Hot Fudge, and Rose Gold. I plan on stringing these together for a mantle garland. For smaller tassels, use my OlyFun Tassel Earrings tutorial. As in that tutorial, you can paint the fabric before making the tassels. OlyFun takes paint, stencils, and stamping very well.

Instructions

Step One

On the OlyFun, using the ruler and white pencil, measure a 20″ by 12″ rectangle. The OlyFun craft packs are 20″ wide, so this will be pretty easy. If you are using OlyFun by the bolt, you’ll need to measure more carefully.

Cut out the rectangle. Fold in half, so the rectangle is 10″ by 12″. I found it was easier to pre-cut all my rectangles before moving onto to the next step.

Step Two

Place the ruler along the fold, 2″ down. Mark this line with the white pencil. This is a guideline for cutting the fringe, which I found very helpful. If you don’t have a white pencil, chalk will work too.

Step Three

Keep the OlyFun folded, for easy cutting. I folded the rectangle in half again, along the first fold, to make cutting go faster. Make straight cuts from the bottom to the white line, about 1/4″ wide.

Step Four

Cut off the last fringe. Set this strip aside. This will be used to tie the tassel at the end.

  • OlyFun Jumbo Tassels 5

Step Five

Open up the folded OlyFun. Smooth out the fringe.

  • OlyFun Jumbo Tassels 6

Step Six

Starting at one end of the middle section, roll it up to the other end tightly.

  • OlyFun Jumbo Tassels 7

Step Seven

Tightly twist the rolled middle.

  • OlyFun Jumbo Tassels 8

Step Eight

Crossover the twisted section.

Step Nine

Using the strip, lay it under the tassel twist, with 3″ to the left and the rest to the right. Wrap the length around the twist multiple times, until a 3″ tail remains. Tie the two tails together, 3 times.

Step Ten

Clip the tails to 1/4″.

Step Eleven

Arrange the fringe to fall neatly.
