Metallic OlyFun New Year's Eve Headband

Categories: Fashion Accessories, Holiday, Winter

New Year’s Eve parties usually mean scrambling to figure out what to wear. If we were attending the annual masquerade, this project would be a shiny mask. Instead, we’ll likely have a nice dinner tomorrow, while people are resting at home from a night of celebration. For a last minute New Year’s Eve look, this stars headband is sure to catch glances from the metallic OlyFun in Rose Gold, Gold, and Silver. This is a no-sew project, takes under an hour, and is beginner level. Adhesive Technologies (AdTech) graciously sent me a Two-Temperature Full Size Cordless Glue Gun and sticks to use for my Fairfield World projects, which I put to good use for this headband. This project is great for tweens to grandma…any ladies who appreciate a little shimmer in their headwear. You can certainly wear it past the festivities! Now, if you need a mask for tonight, I suggest my Black Bird Mask. You can make it in any OlyFun color, but it would look ultra glam in metallic OlyFun!

Instructions

  • STAR PATTERNS 1

Step One

I hand drafted my stars. However, it’s easier to use computer made stars, as they are even. I made three star patterns for you on PicMonkey, a free photo editing and design site. They have several free star overlays, if you want to get fancier than the basic 5 point star. You can download these patterns above, in the supplies list.

Step Two

With the Rose Gold Metallic OlyFun and fabric scissors, cut 3-4 strips 1/2″ wide by the fabric with. For perfect strips, use a clear gridded ruler and pencil, to mark lines 1/2″ apart, on the OlyFun back.

  • BLANK BOX

Step Three

Load the Adhesive Technologies hot glue gun with a long glue stick. Turn the gun to low temp. Plug in the gun and let warm up. I use a silicone mat under my gun, for stray glue, but I find the low temp setting doesn’t drip like the high temp setting. The low temp glue is warm, so you shouldn’t be burned, but still be careful when using hot glue. OlyFun starts to melt with high temp hot glue. I tested this for you.

  • NYE HEADBAND 1

Step Four

Starting at one end of the headband, on the back, add a dot of hot glue. Press one strip end onto the glue, at an upward angle.

  • NYE HEADBAND 7

Step Five

Tightly wrap the strip around the headband, adding glue to the headband on the back with each wrap. The glue helps keep the tension tight.

  • NYE HEADBAND 3

Step Six

When you get to the end of a strip, stop it on the headband back. Cut any excess flush with the headband edge.

  • NYE HEADBAND 2

Step Seven

Add hot glue on top of the strip end. Press a new strip onto that hot glue, lining up the edges and angle.

  • NYE HEADBAND 4

Step Eight

Continue wrapping the headband to the other end, adding more strips as needed.

  • NYE HEADBAND 5

Step Nine

From Rose Gold Metallic OlyFun, cut two rectangles 3″ long by 2″ wide. Fold them in half widthwise, making them 1.5″ in long by 2″ wide. Add hot glue to the front of one headband end. Center one rectangle with the fold at the headband end.

  • NYE HEADBAND 6

Step Ten

Flip the headband over. Add glue along the end edges. Press the rectangle edges over to the back, over the glue. Fold the remaining rectangle half, with edges in. Add hot glue on the headband back. Press the folded rectangle half onto the glue. Repeat this end treatment with the other headband end.

  • BLANK BOX

Step Eleven

Using the star patterns trace on the back and cut out the following:

Large – 2 Gold OlyFun
Medium – 3 Silver OlyFun
Small – 5 Gold OlyFun, 1 Silver OlyFun

  • NYE HEADBAND 8

Step Twelve

Add hot glue to the back of one gold small star. Quickly add the small star to the center of a medium silver star. Press in place. Add hot glue to the back of the medium silver star. Quickly add the layered stars to the center front of a large gold star. Repeat this layering for the other two sets of medium silver and small gold stars. You’ll have 3 layered stars when you are done.

  • NYE HEADBAND 9

Step Thirteen

Flip the large layered star over. Add hot glue to the back. Press the 2nd large star onto the back. Trim the edges to match.

  • NYE HEADBAND 10

Step Fourteen

Decide your layout. For mine, I made the large star off center, and built my design around that placement. Squeeze hot glue onto the wrapped headband, where you want the large star to lay. Press the large star onto the hot glued area. Hot glue two medium layered stars on either side of the large star, overlapping the points.

  • NYE HEADBAND 12

Step Fifteen

On the other side of one medium layered star, hot glue the remaining 3 small stars to the headband.

  • NYE HEADBAND 11

Step Sixteen

To finish off this headband, add a dot of hot glue to the center of the large layered star. Press a clear flat back gem onto the hot glue dot. Repeat gluing gems to the center of each star. The gold stars get clear gems. The silver star gets a gold gem. Let cool completely and remove any hot glue strings, before wearing.
