Khir Indigo Tribal Pillow #1

Categories: Bedding, Decor, Pillow

Our Khir indigo and white tribal pillow is super soft and extremely comfortable. The relaxed approach we took to stenciling this Moroccan inlay design is surprisingly easy. Just dot inside the stencil design using a fabric marker. That’s it!  Finish by adding hand dyed cotton tassels and swirls or decorate the pillow with your favorite embellishments.

Instructions

Step One

Download our suggestions to assist with dying the chunky cotton yarn. Dying process will take 6 to 8 hours. Air dry time 3 to 6 hours depending on location. Yarn must be completely dry before swirls and tassels can be made.

Cut two 20” x 20” squares from the Embrace snow fabric (18” pillow) using the rotary cutter, mat and acrylic ruler.

Set one piece aside. Lay the other on a flat surface. Place a piece of cardboard behind the fabric to use as a blotter.

Step Two

Find the center of the fabric by folding in half and lightly pressing to crease. Tape fabric edges to the cardboard using blue tape. Lay the stencil over the center of the fabric so one row of the Moroccan Inlay pattern is running through the center of the fabric. Tape in place.

Step Three

Using the fabric marker, begin filling in the open areas of the stencil with dots by taking the marker and briefly touching it to the fabric. Continue until the open stencil areas are filled with dots.

Note: for darker spots press the marker down harder. For lighter dots, press softer. Leaving spaces between the dots will give a light and airy feel to the pattern. Remove stencil.

Step Four

Sew or stick (no-sew) edges together to create a pillow case.  Leave the raw edges exposed. If making the non-sewn case, place stenciled fabric square on a flat surface stenciled side down. Run a strip of ¼” Fabric Fusion 1” from the edge onto the fabric on three sides. Carefully place the second 20”x 20” piece of fabric on top. Be sure ends match up and top fabric does not bunch. Pat your hand over the tape seam to ensure bonding. Insert the Soft Touch pillow form through the opening and close by sewing or using the Fabric Fusion tape.

Step Five

Using the blue marker draw a wiggly line over the fused or stitched seam to create a border around the pillow. Set pillow aside.

Step Six

Begin making coils using a 4” piece of yarn. Follow the diagram above. Secure coils with Fabric Fusion tape then set coils aside, sticky side up, until all 7 coils are made

Step Seven

Adhere coils onto the stenciled design using a second piece of fusion tape. Position tape over the yarn end piece to secure well. Following the diagram above place coils in place. Press down with fingers to ensure bonding.

Step Eight

Make four 4” tassels using the tassel maker. Stitch one finished tassel into each pillow corner.
