Farmer's Market Basket

Farmer’s Markets are popping up all over the country with the warm weather we are experiencing and what a delight there are to see. Fresh produce and baked goods from our neighbors are always a good thing. Before you venture out to the local farmer’s market you might want to take the time to make up one of these lovely Farmer’s Market Baskets for yourself or perhaps for a friend. Cushioned and protective with lots of pockets for herbs and smaller items you might want to keep separate.

What you need to make this project

Materials
Main Fabric - 3/4 of a yard
Lining Fabric - 3/4 of a yard
Smooth Fusible Fleece - 1/3 yard
Support Soft Foam Stablizer - 1 1/4 yard
Rick Rack - Jumbo 1 1/4 yard

Instructions

Step One

Cut the following:
Three 12 inch circles; one each from main fabric, lining and Support
Three 12 inch by 39 inch rectangles; one each from main fabric and lining
One 11.5 inch by 39 inch rectangle from Support
Three 6 inch by 39 inch rectangles; one each from main fabric, lining and Smooth
Four 2 .5 inch by 12 inch rectangles; two each from lining and Smooth
Two 2 inch by 12 inch rectangles from main fabric

Farmer’s Market Basket

Step Two

Lay rick rack along the top edge of the front pocket even with the raw edge and baste to secure. With right sides together stitch the lining to the main fabric pocket along the top edge. Turn right sides out and press. Diagram B

Step Three

Baste the Support to the back of the main fabric, aligning the bottom and side edges.
Pin the pocket to the front of the basket side, matching the bottom and side edges. Divide the pocket into four equal pockets and top stitch.

Step Four

Fuse the Smooth to the back of the handle lining pieces. With right sides together stitch the main fabric handle pieces to the lining along one edge. Roll the fabric to align the opposite edges and stitch. Turn right side out and press. Repeat to make the second handle.

Step Five

With right sides together fold the basket sides together and stitch along the side seam and forming a tube. Press the seam open and turn right side out. Diagram E

Step Six

Pin the first handle over the center back seam of the basket, placing it 2 inches from either side of the seam. Repeat attaching the second handle to the opposite side of the basket top. Fold the basket in half and place a mark at the side opposite the back seam line. Refold the basket in the opposite direction and place marks. Diagram F

Step Seven

Baste the Support to the main fabric bottom. Divide the circle into four and place marks. With right sides together pin the basket bottom to the bottom edge of the basket sides matching the four markings on the basket bottom and sides. Stitch. Diagram G

Step Eight

Create the basket lining by repeating steps. Note: Be sure to leave a 6 inch opening along the back seam of the lining to allow the basket to be turned right side out through the opening. Diagram H

Step Nine

With right sides together insert the basket into the lining and stitch along the top edge. Turn right side out through the opening left in the lining and press. Hand stitch the side opening in the lining closed. Diagram I
