DR. Seuss Crib Quilt

Categories: Gifts, Kid Friendly, Quilts

This is an “Around the World” traditional quilting pattern. We made it up for a crib using bright Dr. Seuss fabrics, but it would look wonderful using other bright children’s fabrics or in Amish colors of deep red, green, and purple.

2 pieces 3 ½ x 33 ½“
17 squares 3 ½ x 3 ½“

B – 2 pieces 2 x 36 ½“

C – 20 squares 3 ½ x 3 ½“

D – 2 pieces 3 ½ x 36 ½”
2 pieces 3 ½ x 42 ½”
12 squares 3 ½ x 3 ½”

Step Two

(1/4” seam allowance)
With right sides facing and edges aligned, stitch squares in the following color
sequence to make 9 rows of 9 squares each:
D – C – A – B – B – B – A – C – D
C – A – B – B – C – B – B – A – C
A – B – B – C – D – C – B – B – A

A – B – B – C – D – C – B – B – A
C – A – B – B – C – B – B – A – C
D – C – A – B – B – B – A – C – D

Step Three

With right sides facing and raw edges aligned, join rows together to make quilt top.

Step Four

Add inner light blue fabric border. First attach the 3 ½ x 27 ½ inch pieces to the top and bottom of the quilt.

Then repeat attach the 3 ½ x 33 ½ inch pieces to the sides.

Repeat attaching the middle and outer borders.

Step Five

Cut batting 1” larger than quilt top all around. Cut backing fabric 1-2 inches larger than the quilt top.

Step Six

To quilt on your home machine:

Use basting spray to temporarily adhere each of your quilt layers together. Follow manufacturer’s instructions on the basting spray can or use an alternative method of basting such as safety pin, etc.

For best results use a walking foot or dual feed foot on your machine.

Example quilt shows through the diagonal of each square to form and X. You can also quilt “in the ditch” by stitching right in each seam or use pre-cut quilting templates.

Step Seven

To finish

Trim batting and backing.

Cut 4 3-inch strips of your binding fabric and sew them end to end. Press the strips in half the long way.

Line both raw edges of the binding up with the raw edge of the quilt. Sew with a 3/8” seam the binding to the top of the quilt, along the sides of your quilt, sewing through the binding and all three layers of the quilt and trim even with the top and bottom of your quilt. Fold binding around to the back. Pin. Stitch “in the ditch” from the top of the quilt through to catch the binding on the back.

Repeat step 3 to sew the binding on the top and bottom sides of the quilt, except but the binding and extra ½ inch long on both ends, so you can fold under the raw edges before stitching.
