DIY Zombie Bride Costume

Categories: Costume, Halloween, Holiday

Halloween is when the dead rise to haunt us. This zombie bride costume is straight from the grave…ok maybe not. However, with the rise of zombie culture, this OlyFun costume is sure to be a hit. This costume requires some knowledge of draping on a dress form. However, if you don’t have a dress form, you can drape it on the person it’s for. If it’s for yourself, get a friend to help you. The OlyFun yardage I used was for my petite daughter. If you’re curvier or want a fuller dress, you will need more yardage and to sew two long pieces together before draping. OlyFun doesn’t fray, making it great for distressing and quick costumes. Snow White OlyFun is sheer. You can either double it up, or wear a skin toned slip under it, as my daughter is. Add any creepy accessories you desire, for a more dramatic zombie look.

Step One

Adjust the dressform to fit the person this costume is for. Pin a piece 2yd piece of Snow White OlyFun in a column on the dress form. Cut down the fold about 6-8″. Pin this opening under the arm hole, bringing the front of the cut to the shoulder line. Cut the back straight across to the “selvage”.

Step Two

Down the front center cut to about 3-4 inches below the neck bone. Make these longer for more cleavage. Pleat the front sections to each shoulder, making sure the armhole is free of fabric.

  • BLANK

Step Three

Pleat the back, pinning the fabric to the dressform. Make this fitted, if you want a side closure. Otherwise pleat it larger than the body for a slip on dress.

Step Four

Cut a long 3″ wide strip. Fold this over the back pleats, adjusting the pins, so they are only holding the two pieces of fabric together.

  • BLANK

Step Five

Cut two long 6″ wide strips. Fold one over each shoulder pleated section, adjusting the pins. Do not pin them to the back yet. Remove any pins holding the dress to the form.

Step Six

At the sewing machine, straight stitch across the back pleated section.

Step Seven

Straight stitch across the shoulder pleat.

  • ZOMBIE COSTUME 4

Step Eight

Invert the strap fabric. Trim the excess pleated fabric. Revert the strap fabric. Straight stitch down the strap side opening. Trim strap fabric to be 1/4″ from side seam.

  • BLANK

Step Nine

Straight stitch down the side. If you want a side closure, put it in now. Hook and loop tape is rather handy for a side closure.

  • BLANK

Step Ten

Place the dress on the wearer. Pin the straps onto the back, covering bra straps. Distress the dress bottom by cutting ragged Vs.

  • BLANK

Step Eleven

At the sewing machine, straight stitch the straps in place, behind the pleated section. Trim away excess strap fabric.

Step Twelve

Draw a right rib cage section on a Snow White OlyFun piece. Use a medical diagram as a reference. It doesn’t need to be accurate and perfect.

  • ZOMBIE COSTUME 6

Step Thirteen

Cut it out, leaving a 1/2″ to connect the rib bones together.

  • ZOMBIE COSTUME 7

Step Fourteen

Lay the rib cage on a piece of Cherry Pop OlyFun. Pin it in place. Trace about 1/2″ around the ribcage, making a red oval. Cut this out.

  • ZOMBIE COSTUME 8

Step Fifteen

At the sewing machine, stitch around the rib cage.

  • BLANK

Step Sixteen

Cut a 8″ strip selvage to selvage. Fold this in 3rds, with the long edges overlapping in the center. Zig zag stitch down the center, and at both ends. Trim any wonky fabric edges. This is the underbust strap, to cinch the dress.

  • ZOMBIE COSTUME 10

Step Seventeen

Pin the underbust strap to the dress, under the bust. Pin the ribcage, on the right dress front, over the underbust strap.

  • BLANK

Step Eighteen

At the sewing machine, stitch around the ribcage with red thread.

Step Nineteen

Head outside. Put a trash bag over your dress form. Put the dress on the form.

  • ZOMBIE COSTUME 12

Step Twenty

Water down red paint in a bowl.

Step Twenty-one

Splatter the dress with red and dark red paint. Start with slinging the paint, like blood cast off. Then, rub the brush across your fingers for a fine blood mist. The mist helps fill in spaces without covering them with paint. Let the dress dry completely before wearing.

Step Twenty-two

Use black and red cream makeup blended with fingers, for a basic zombie look. I painted her face, collar bones, and streaked her arms. You can go more extreme with makeup.
