DIY Snowman Ornament

Category: Decor

This DIY Snowman Ornament is a great way to incorporate a classic Winter image into your holiday tree decor.  Our tree is decorated with mostly handmade ornaments, and we’ve been busy adding some new ones. This snowman ornament is a way for us to share a little of our tree with you. This is a no-sew project that kids to adults can create. Handmade ornaments make great gifts. With one bag of Icelets, you should be able to fill 2-3 ornaments.

Project Notes: This is my classic version of a snowman. You could make it more colorful. Add some colorful chunky glitter mixed with the icelets for some whimsy. Use other colors and details to personalize your ornament design. Use layered, oversized, printed, sparkly or textured ribbon (mine is black velvet) for some added flair. The limits are only your imagination.

Instructions

Step One

Carefully remove the top of the ornament and set it aside.

Step Two

Roll a piece of scrap paper into a funnel. Put the tapered bottom into the ornament opening.

Step Three

Pour some Icelets into the funnel, tapping the ornament, so they will fall inside and to settle them. Keep doing this until the ornament is completely filled with icelets.

Step Four

Add a little E6000 to the opening edge of the ornament. Carefully replace the ornament top. Set the ornament up, while the E6000 cures.

Step Five

With the small paint brush and orange paint, add a sideways long triangle for the carrot nose. I curved the short line, to make it look more carrot like. Let the 1st coat dry. Add more coats until the carrot is opaque. Wash and dry your paint brush

Step Six

With the small paint brush and black paint, add two wiggly circles above the carrot for eyes. They should look like coal or rocks. However, if you prefer smooth circles, you can add 4 white dots in the centers later, to look like buttons

Step Seven

For the smile, paint 5 smaller wiggly circles under the carrot in a curved placement. Let the circles dry. Add more coats of paint until they are opaque.

Step Eight

Tie a bow to fit around the top of the ornament. Wrap one end of the bow tail around the ornament top, adding some E6000 with a toothpick to secure the tail. Clip the other tail, and add a little glue inside the knot and behind it to secure the ribbon to the ornament top.

Step Nine

Tie a loop of ribbon to the top hook of the ornament, so it can be hung on a tree or elsewhere.

OPTIONAL: I like the matte look of the acrylic paint, but if you want a bit or a lot of shine, you can seal the painted designs by carefully painting Mod Podge Matte or Gloss over the paint. Mod Podge does have a sticky finish, but this does fade with time, as it cures longer. Usually this takes about 2-3 days.
