DIY Oly*Fun Nursing Necklace

Categories: Fashion Accessories, Kid Friendly, Patriotic

This necklace with Oly*Fun and Poly Pellets is perfect for nursing babies. The length falls mid-bust, so babies can grasp on to it while nursing. Often, babies get distracted by noises and moving things. Nursing necklaces give babies something colorful to focus on, which increasing feeding time and amount. This can also be used by bottle fed babies, as how the babies are held is similar to the default nursing position and they have the same need to focus while feeding. You can make the necklace longer or shorter, based on your body type. I made mine 30″, which is the measurement from around my neck to mid-bust, where a necklace would comfortably sit. Oly*Fun comes in 18 colors, so you can use any combo of those to create this necklace. April is Autism Awareness month, so I chose two of their colors for this necklace.

Instructions

Step One

Draw a 30″ by 3″ rectangle on Blueberry Oly*Fun. using the quilting ruler and pencil. Cut it out. This will be the necklace tube.

Cut 8 pieces of Sky Blue Oly*Fun 1/4″ by 6″. These will be the dividing ties.

Step Two

Fold the Blueberry Oly*Fun rectangle in half long ways. On the sewing machine, sew the long edges together, about 1/4″ from the edge. Baste stitch one short end.

Step Three

Push the chopstick into the basted end of the tube, turning the tube inside out. Remove the basting stitches.

Step Four

Smooth the tube out and fold and half.

Step Five

About 1/2″ inch from the center, make a tight running stitch with the blue thread and hand sewing needle. Gently pulled the thread to gather the fabric. Wrap the thread around the gathers 3 times. Stitch back into the fabric and knot off. Cut the thread close to the knot.

Step Six

Put the funnel tip into one end of the tube. Pour some Poly-Pellets into the funnel. Shake them to the center. Make sure there is enough to form about a 1″ bead.

REPEAT STEPS 5 & 6 to make three beads on each side of the center. I made two beads bigger, for more visual interest.
