Bring some cheer inside on a cold day with this classic crochet snowman pillow.

 

What you need to make this project

Materials
Fairfield Crafter’s Choice 12” x 12” Pillow Form.
Red Heart Super Saver yarn (100% acrylic, 7 oz/198 g, 364 yd/333 m) – 1 skein each in 311 White (CA), 334 Buff (CB), 256 Carrot (CC), and 312 Black (CD).
0.75” (2 cm) sew through or shank buttons – 6 for smile.
1.5” (4 cm) sew through or shank buttons – 2 for eyes.
0.875” (2.5 cm) sew through or shank buttons – 2 for back closure.
Supplies
US H-8/5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
Yarn or tapestry needle with eye small enough to sew through buttons.
Stitch marker or scrap yarn.

Step One

Gauge

  • Front Panel = 6.5” (16.5 cm) diameter through Rnd 6 in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project.

Pattern Notes

  • When choosing colors, note that CA is the color of the snowman’s face, CB is the main color of the pillow, CC is the color of the Carrot Nose, and CD is the color of the Hat.
  • The Front Panel is crocheted in the round. Other pieces are crocheted flat in rows. Some pieces include edging worked in the round.
  • Ch 1 at beginning of Rounds does not count as a stitch.

Step Two

Front Panel

  • With CA, ch 4, sk 3 ch, join with sl st to first ch to form circle.
  • Rnd 1: Ch 1, 12 dc in ring, place marker in last st and move up each Rnd to mark position, do not join and begin working in unjoined spirals. (12 sts)
  • Rnd 2: 2 dc in each st around. (24 sts)
  • Rnd 3: *2 dc in next st, dc in next st; rep from * around. (36 sts)
  • Rnd 4: *2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts; rep from * around. (48 sts)
  • Rnd 5: *2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts; rep from * around. (60 sts)
  • Rnd 6: *2 dc in next st, dc in next 4 sts; rep from * around. (72 sts)
  • Remove stitch marker, hdc in next st, sc in next st, join CB with sl st to next st and begin working in joined Rounds. Fasten off CA.
  • Rnd 7: Ch 1, 2 dc in same st, *dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 11 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st; rep from * around, ending last rep after **, 2 dc in first st, ch 1, sc (counts as ch 1) to top of first dc to join. (84 sts + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 8: Ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-2 sp, *dc in next 21 sts,** (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep after **, 2 dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc (counts as ch 1) to top of first dc to join. (100 sts + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 9: Ch 1, dc in same ch-2 sp, *dc in next 25 sts,** (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep after **, dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc (counts as ch 1) to top of first dc to join. (108 sts + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnd 10: Ch 1, dc in same ch-2 sp, *dc in each st across to ch-2 sp,** (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch-2 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep after **, dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 1, sc (counts as ch 1) to top of first dc to join. (116 sts + 4 ch-2 sp)
  • Rnds 11-12: Rep Rnd 10 twice or until Front Panel measures approximately 12” (30.5 cm) square. Fasten off CB. (132 sts + 4 ch-2 sp)

Step Three

Back Panel

  • With CB, ch 37.
  • Row 1: Turn, sk 3 ch (counts as dc), dc in next ch and in each ch across. (35 sts)
  • Row 2: Turn, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next st and in each st across.
  • Rep Row 2 until Back Panel measures approximately 10.5” (26.5 cm) long. Do not fasten off.

Back Panel Edging

  • Rnd 1: Turn to work along unworked edge, ch 1, [2 sc in side of each row] across to foundation chain, ch 1, turn to work along foundation chain, sc in next 35 sts, ch 1, turn to work along unworked edge, [2 sc in side of each row] across to last row, ch 1, sl st to top of first ch 3 of last row, fasten off CB.

Step Four

Buttonhole Panel

  • Work as for Back Panel, repeating Row 2 until Buttonhole Panel measures approximately 2.5” (6.5 cm) long. Do not fasten off.
  • Row 3: Turn, ch 1, sc in first st and in next 5 sts, ch 3, sk 3 sts, sc in next 17 sts, ch 3, sk 3 sts, sc in next 6 sts. (29 sts + 2 ch-3 sp)

Buttonhole Panel Edging

  • Rnd 1: Turn to work along unworked edge, ch 1, sc in side of first row, [2 sc in side of next row] across to foundation chain, ch 1, turn to work along foundation chain, sc in next 35 sts, ch 1, turn to work along unworked edge, [2 sc in side of each row] across to last row, sc in side of last row, ch 1, do not fasten off, resume working in rows.
  • Row 4: Sc in first st and in next 5 sts, sc in next 3 ch, sc in next 17 sts, sc in next 3 ch, sc in next 6 sts, fasten off CB. (35 sts)

Step Five

Carrot Nose

  • With CC, ch 2.
  • Row 1: Turn, sk 1 ch, 2 sc in next ch. (2 sts)
  • Row 2: Turn, ch 1, sc in first st, 2 sc in next st. (3 sts)
  • Row 3: Turn, ch 1, sc in first 2 sts, 2 sc in next st. (4 sts)
  • Row 4: Turn, ch 1, sc in first st and in each st across.
  • Rep Row 4 until Carrot Nose measures approximately 3.5” (9 cm) long. Do not fasten off.

Carrot Nose Edging

  • Rnd 1: Turn to work along long edge, ch 1, sc in side of each row along long edge to point, 2 sc in point, turn to work along long edge, sc in side of each row along long edge, ch 1, sl st to first sc of last row, fasten off CC with long yarn tail (approximately 24”/61 cm) for seaming.

Step Six

Hat

  • With CD, ch 16.
  • Row 1: Turn, sk 1 ch, sc in next 15 ch. (15 sts)
  • Row 2: Turn, ch 1, sc in first st and in each st across.
  • Rep Row 2 until Hat measures approximately 2” (5 cm) long.
  • Row 3: Ch 5, turn, sk 1 ch, sc in next 4 ch, sc in next 15 sts. (19 sts)
  • Row 4: Ch 5, turn, sk 1 ch, sc in next 4 ch, sc in next 19 sts. (23 sts)
  • Row 5: Turn, ch 1, sl st in next 19 sts, sc in next 4 sts, fasten off CD with long yarn tail (approximately 24”/61 cm) for seaming.

Step Seven

Assembly

  • Position buttons, Carrot Nose, and Hat on face on Front Panel.

  • Thread yarn needle with long yarn tail from Carrot Nose. With yarn needle, sew Carrot Nose to face.
  • Thread yarn needle with approximately 18” (46 cm) in CD. With yarn needle, sew buttons for smile into position.
  • Thread yarn needle with approximately 8” (20.5 cm) in CD. With yarn needle, sew buttons for eyes into position.
  • Thread yarn needle with long yarn tail from Hat. With yarn needle, sew Hat to face.
  • Place Back Panel on the bottom with Front Panel on top with facial features facing up. With CB and crochet hook, beginning at side next to top, join with single crochet seam (see Pattern Notes), working one single crochet each stitch on Front Panel through both layers of Panels around the side, then across the bottom, then around the side of Panels. Do not fasten off.
  • Place Buttonhole Panel on top of Back Panel with buttonholes towards bottom of Panels. Join with single crochet seam (see Pattern Notes), working through Front Panel and Buttonhole Panel ONLY across top of Panels. Fasten off CB.
  • Position buttons for back closure near button holes. Thread yarn needle with approximately 18” (46 cm) in CB. With yarn needle, sew buttons for back closure into position.

  • With yarn needle, weave in remaining ends on inside of Panels.
  • Insert pillow form into pillow case. Close with buttons.
