This crochet sloth pattern makes a huggable creature sure to delight any child. This is a beginner-friendly crochet project that works up quickly in a super bulky yarn.

What you need to make this project

Materials
Fairfield Poly-Fil Crafter’s Choice Dry Packing Fiber Fill, 20 ounce bag.
Bernat Baby Blanket yarn (100% polyester, 10.5 oz/300 g, 220 yd/201 m) – 2 skeins in 04010 Baby Sand, or approximately 270 yd (245 m) in any super bulky weight yarn.
Bernat Blanket yarn (100% polyester, 10.5 oz/300 g, 220 yd/201 m) – 1 skein each in 10830 Almond (CB) and 10040 Coal (CC), or approximately 25 yd (23 m) each in CB and CC in any super bulky weight yarn.
15 mm black safety eyes – 1 pair.
Supplies
US Size K-10.5/6.5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
Yarn needle.
Locking stitch markers.

    Step One

    Sarita Sloth

    Finished Size

    • Body measures 12.5” (32 cm) long x 9” (23 cm) wide before sewing on limbs and stuffing.

    Gauge

    • 11 hdc = 4” (10 cm). Exact gauge is not critical for this project. Stitches should be tight so that pillow doesn’t show through.

    Pattern Notes

    • Project is crocheted in the round with the right (front) side facing up.
    • Unless otherwise directed, move stitch marker up each Round to mark position of last stitch.
    • When choosing colors, note CA is the main color of the sloth, CB is the color of the Face, and CC is the color of the Eyes, Nose, and Smile.

    Step Two

    Body

    • With CA and starting with long yarn tail (approximately 18”/46 cm) for seaming, ch 51.
    • Set Up Row: Turn, skip 1 ch, hdc in next 50 ch, place stitch marker in last hdc, being careful not to twist, begin working in the round in unjoined spirals. (50 sts)
    • Rnd 1: Hdc in each st around.
    • Rep Rnd 1 until Body measures approximately 9” (23 cm) from start.

    Create opening for arms

    • Rnd 2: [Ch 5, skip 5 sts, hdc in next 20 sts] twice.
    • Rnd 3: [HdcBL in next 5 ch, hdc in next 20 sts] twice.
    • Rep Rnd 1 until Body measures approximately 11” (28 cm) from start.

    Decrease for top of head

    • Rnd 4: [Hdc2tog, hdc in next 3 sts] around. (40 sts)
    • Rnd 5: [Hdc2tog, hdc in next 2 sts] around. (30 sts)
    • Rnd 6: [Hdc2tog, hdc in next st] around. (20 sts)
    • Rnd 7: Sc in next st, sl st in next st. Fasten off CA with long yarn tail (approximately 18”/46 cm) for seaming.

    Step Three

    Face

    • With CB, ch 11.
    • Rnd 1: Turn, skip 1 ch, 2 hdc in next ch, hdc in next 8 ch, 4 hdc in next ch, place stitch marker in second hdc of 4-hdc group to mark position, turn to work on other side of foundation chain, hdc in unworked side of next 8 ch, 2 hdc in last ch, place stitch marker in last hdc to mark position. (24 sts)
    • Rnd 2: 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next st and in each st around to marked st, 2 hdc in marked stitch, place marker in last hdc worked,** 2 hdc in next st, rep from * to **. (28 sts)
    • Rnd 3: Rep Rnd 2. (32 sts)
    • Rnd 4: 2 hdc in next st, *dc in next st and in each st around to marked st, 2 hdc in marked stitch, place marker in last hdc worked,** 2 hdc in next st, rep from * to **. (36 sts)
    • Rnd 5: 2 hdc in next st, dc in next st and in each st around to market st, 2 hdc in marked st, sc in next st, sl st in next st. (38 sts)
    • Fasten off CB with long yarn tail (approximately 18”/46 cm) for seaming.

    Step Four

    Limbs (Make 4)

    • With CA, ch 11.
    • Set Up Row: Turn, skip 1 ch, hdc in next 10 ch, place stitch marker in last hdc, being careful not to twist, begin working in the round in unjoined spirals. (10 sts)
    • Rnd 1: Hdc in each st around.
    • Rnds 2-12: Rep Rnd 1, 11 more times.
    • Rnd 13: Sc in next st, sl st in next st. Fasten off CA with long yarn tail (approximately 12”/10.5 cm) for seaming.

    Step Five

    Eyes and Nose (Make 3)

    • With CC, ch 2.
    • Rnd 1: Turn, skip first ch, 6 hdc in next ch, sl st to first hdc to join.
    • Fasten off CC with long yarn tail (approximately 12”/10.5 cm) for seaming.

    Step Six

    Assemble Face

    • Position Eyes on front of Face.
    • Position first safety eye on top of first Eye. Attach firmly by securing washer on back. Repeat with second safety eye on top of second Eye.

    • With yarn needle threaded with yarn tail in CC, sew first Eye to Face, using photos as guide for placement. Repeat with second Eye.
    • With yarn needle threaded with yarn tail in CC, sew Nose to Face, using photos as guide for placement.
    • With yarn needle threaded with CC, backstitch (see Pattern Notes) Smile on Face.
    • With yarn needle, weave in yarn tails for Eyes, Nose, and Smile on inside of Face.
    • With yarn needle, weave in yarn tail from start of Face on inside of Face.

    Step Seven

    Assemble Body

    • With yarn tail in CA from top of head, seam the top of head closed with whipstitch (see Pattern Notes). With yarn needle, weave in yarn tail from top of head on inside of Body.
    • Stuff Face firmly with Poly-Fil.
    • Position Face on front of Body using photos as guide.

    • With yarn needle threaded with CB from Face, join Face with whipstitch (see Pattern Notes) to Body, being careful not to sew through layers.

    • With yarn needle, weave in yarn tail on inside of Body.
    • Stuff Body firmly with Poly-Fil.

    • With yarn tail in CA from start of Body, seam Set Up Row closed with whipstitch (see Pattern Notes). With yarn needle, weave in yarn tail from start of Body.

    Step Eight

    Assemble Limbs

    • With yarn tail in CB from start of first Limb, seam Set Up Row closed with whipstitch (see Pattern Notes). With yarn needle, weave in yarn tail from start of Limb. Repeat with 3 remaining Limbs.
    • Stuff Limbs firmly with Poly-Fil.
    • Position first Limb to first arm opening on Body. With yarn tail in CB from end of first Limb, seam to arm opening with whipstitch (see Pattern Notes). With yarn needle, weave in yarn tail. Repeat for second Limb and second arm opening.
    • Position third Limb at base of Body, using photos as guide for placement. With yarn tail in CB from end of third Limb, seam to Body with whipstitch (see Pattern Notes). With yarn needle, weave in yarn tail. Repeat for fourth Limb.
