Crochet Patchwork Cat

Categories: Doll, Crochet

This beginner-friendly crocheted stuffed toy mimics the style of a classic cat quilt block. Use planned colors or make it scrappy to use up leftover bits of yarn in different colors. The Poly-Fil® Crafter’s Choice® Dry Packing Fiber Fill is easy to stuff and gives the cat a firm structure so it can stand easily. The Patchwork Cat crochet pattern is available here on Underground Crafter.

Instructions

Step One

The Patchwork Cat is an easy crochet pattern that makes a great first softie project. It uses basic crochet stitches (chain, single crochet, and slip stitch), working in rows (for the patchwork pieces) and rounds (for the join), increasing, decreasing, and joining pieces (with links to photo tutorials).

Finished Size

  • Approximately 10.5” (26.5 cm) length (from tip of tail to toe) x 5.75” (14.5 cm) width x 1.25” (3 cm) depth when stuffed.

Gauge

  • 4 sts = 0.75” (2 cm) in pattern. Exact gauge is not critical for this project but stitches should be small so that fiber filling doesn’t show.

The Poly-Fil® Crafter’s Choice® Dry Packing Fiber Fill allows you to firmly pack the cat so it has the appearance of a three dimensional quilt block.

Step Two

If you’re new to crochet, learn the basic stitches required for this pattern with these video tutorials by Fiber Flux.

Learn how to crochet a chain with this video,…

…how to make the single crochet in this video,…

…and how to crochet the slip stitch in this video.

Step Three

For this project, you’ll start by crocheting strips.

I used planned colors, but you could make a magic ball of yarn using scraps that are combined using the Russian join. You can find B.Hooked Crochet‘s Russian join video tutorial here. I crocheted over the yarn tails as I worked so I didn’t have many ends to weave in. You can find Fiber Flux’s video tutorial for crocheting over yarn tails as you work here.

Step Four

Once the strips are crocheted, you’ll join them using a whipstitch seam following the assembly diagram. You can find my photo tutorial for joining with the whipstitch here.

Once the front and back of the cat are assembled, you’ll join the gusset with a single crochet seam to give this cat some dimension. You can find my photo tutorial for the single crochet seam here.

Once the front, back, and gusset are almost entirely seamed, you’ll attach the cat craft eyes and stuff with Poly-Fil® Crafter’s Choice® Dry Packing Fiber Fill. Be sure to pack in the stuffing tightly or the cat will be lumpy instead of firm.
