Step One

Kernel the Giant Candy Corn Softie

Additional Materials

  • Lion Brand Hometown USA yarn (100% acrylic, 5 oz/140 g, 81 yd/74 m) – 1 skein in 100 New York White (CA) and 2 skeins each in 133 Syracuse Orange (CB) and 158 Pittsburgh Yellow (CC), or approximately 40 yd (36.5 m) in CA, 162 yd (142 m) in CB, and 120 yd (110 m) in CC in any super bulky weight yarn.
  • US Size K-10.5/6.5 mm crochet hook, or any size needed to obtain correct gauge.
  • 16 mm round comic safety eyes – 1 pair.
  • 13 mm black oval craft nose – 1.

Finished Size

  • 15” (38 cm) tall before stuffing.

Gauge

  • 10 sc = 4” (10 cm). Exact gauge is not required for this pattern. Stitches should be small so that fiber filling doesn’t show.

Pattern Notes

Step Two

Back Panel

  • With CA, ch 2.
  • Row 1: Turn, skip first ch, 2 sc in next ch. (2 sts)
  • Row 2: Turn, ch 1, sc in first st, 2 sc in next st. (3 sts)
  • Row 3: Turn, ch 1, sc in first st and in each st across to last st, 2 sc in last st. (Increases by 1 st)
  • Rows 4-16: Rep Row 3, 13 times, changing to CB in last yo of final sc in Row 16. Fasten off CA. (17 sts)
  • Rows 17-40: Rep Row 3, 24 times, changing to CC in last yo of final sc in Row 40. Fasten off CB. (41 sts)
  • Rows 41-50: Rep Row 3, 10 times. Fasten off CC. (51 sts)

Step Three

Front Panel

  • Rep instructions as for Back Panel. Do not fasten off CC at end of Row 50.

Step Four

Assembly and Finishing

  • Position first safety eye on Front Panel. When satisfied with placement, snap washer into place to secure. Rep with second safety eye. Position craft nose on Front Panel. When satisfied with placement, snap washer into place to secure.

  • Position Front Panel on top of Back Panel with facial decorations right side up.

  • With CC and working along angled edge, join with single crochet seam as follows (see Pattern Notes): sc in side of each row, working through both layers until the last row of CC. Change to CB in last yo of last sc join in CC section as shown below. Fasten off CC.

  • With CB, sc in side of each row, working through both layers until last row of CB. Change to CA in last yo of last sc join in CB section. Fasten off CB. With CA, sc in side of each row, working through both layers, to tip.
  • Turn, sc through both layers at tip. Turn to work along other angled edge. Sc in side of each row, working through both layers, until last row of CA. Place locking stitch marker in loops of before color change with final yo as shown below. Fasten off CA. Stuff tip firmly with fiber filling. Remove stitch marker, insert hook into loops, and change to CB. With CB, sc in side of each row, working through both layers until last row of CB. Change to CC in last yo of last sc join in CB section. Fasten off CB. Continue stuffing with fiber filling as you work.

  • With CC, sc in side of each row, working through both layers, to straight edge. Turn to work along straight edge. Continue to seam, working through each stitch on both layers of Row 50. Continue stuffing softie, being sure to fill corners. When stuffing is firm, join with sl st to first sc of seam. Fasten off CC.
  • With yarn needle, weave in ends on inside of softie.
