Crochet Baby Blocks

Categories: Gifts, Kid Friendly, Crochet

Soft foam cubes are covered with crocheted squares to make these crochet baby blocks. They are soft and squishy so they are great for babies to grab and play with but thanks to the foam they also hold their shape really well. You can make them in any color combination you want. I used 3 colors of yarn for the sides of each of my blocks and another color to join the squares for a total of 4 colors per block. They are really easy to make because the squares are just made of rows of single crochet. Single crochet is also used to join the squares.

Instructions

Step One

The first thing you will need to do is prepare your foam blocks. Use a ruler to measure a 4″ strip of foam and cut it out. I used a bread knife to cut mine. Then cut that 4″ strip into 4″ pieces. Using the 18″ foam you will be able to get 4 blocks from each strip and a total of 16 blocks from the whole piece.

  • baby block squares

Step Two

Next crochet your sides. You will need 6 sides per block, I used 3 colors per block, 2 of each color. I used matching colors opposite each other so top and bottom were one color, front and back another, and the two sides the third color. I then used a fourth color to join them.

To make the squares:

ch 16

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch to the end (15 sc)

Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in each stitch across (15 sc)

Rows 3-15: repeat row 2

  • four sides

Step Three

Use a single crochet stitch to join 4 of your squares into a a sort of tube shape. If you are using 3 colors like I did and they are colors A, B, and C you would first join one side of one A square to one side of one B square. Then join one side of your other A square to the opposite side of your B square. Last you will join your second B square first to the opposite side of the A square you just added, then to the opposite side of the first A square. Single crochet evenly along the sides to join, you should have 15 stitches along each side.

  • sides and bottom

Step Four

Next add the bottom square. This will be a C color square and you will add it to one of the open sides of the square tube you made in the last step. Single crochet all the way around all four sides and in the corners work one single crochet into the joining stitches to really close of the corners.

  • foam insert

Step Five

Place your foam block into the crocheted piece.

  • finished blocks

Step Six

Place the last square on the top and crochet around just like you did on the bottom, sealing the foam block inside. Weave in any ends that you have.
