Conversation Heart Gift Card Sleeve Envelopes

Categories: Gifts, Utility, Bags and Totes, Oly*Fun, Holiday, Winter

Conversation hearts and gifts are ubiquitous for Valentine’s Day.  In this project, I combined them to make gift card sleeve envelopes, perfect for friends or loved ones. These are easily customizable, using a Silhouette Cameo. You can alter the text, with the person’s name or a short phrase. I chose my daughter’s nickname, and phrases commonly found on conversation hearts. For this project, you will need Gift Card Sleeve Part 1 and Part 2. OlyFun is a fabric that cuts like paper and doesn’t fray, making it perfect to use with a Silhouette Cameo. I chose regular OlyFun colors that resemble the candy colors, and red metallic OlyFun to match the candy printing. Though I made these gift card sleeve envelopes for Valentine’s Day, these are perfect for other holidays, birthdays, weddings, births, and celebratory gift giving occasions. These can hold small items like money, gift cards, jewelry, and other small treats. Unlike regular gift card sleeves, these are reusable, making them both a container and a gift.

Instructions

  • GIFT CARDS SLEEVES 1

Step One

Using the drafting ruler and pen, mark out a 12″x12″ square on the back of the Metallic Red OlyFun. On the Bubble Gum, Lemon Drop, Kiwi, Sky Blue, and Orchid OlyFun, draw a 8.25″ by 2.75″ rectangle. With the scissors, cut out the square and rectangles.

Step Two

Smooth the Metallic Red OlyFun square onto a new or lightly used Silhouette Cameo cutting mat. Smooth down the OlyFun with a stiff edge, like a gift card. I have a stack of old gift cards that I save for project materials, and keep one handy for smoothing OlyFun onto a Silhouette Cameo cutting mat.

Step Three

Load Gift Card Sleeve Part 2 into Silhouette Studio. Load the cutting mat to your Silhouette Cameo. Set the fabric cutting blade to 5. If the cutting settings don’t preset load to “Fabric: Thick like canvas”, please set it to that. Send the file to your Silhouette Cameo and wait for it to cut. When it’s complete, unload the cutting mat from the machine. Remove the excess OlyFun from the mat, to reveal your cut pieces. These are the bottom layer of the gift card sleeves. Remove them from the cutting mat and set them aside.

Step Four

Open Gift Card Sleeve Part 1 into the Silhouette Cameo. Onto the Silhouette Cameo cutting mat, smooth on the rectangles. Look at the file measurements, to see where to place the OlyFun rectangles. Smooth the fabric onto the cutting mat with the gift card.

Step Five

Load the mat to the Silhouette Cameo. Send the part 2 file to the machine. When it’s done cutting, unload the mat from the machine. Remove the excess OlyFun from the cut pieces. I choose not to use the inner letter sections as they are tiny and tedious to hand sew. You can use them if you want to.

Step Six

Pair the tops and bottoms together, to make pairs. Straight pin around the edges, to stabilize the OlyFun while sewing.

  • GIFT CARD SLEEVES 7

Step Seven

Load the sewing machine with thread that matches a top. Straight stitch around the pairs, 1/8″ from the edge.

  • GIFT CARD SLEEVES 8

Step Eight

Flip the stitched pair over. Line up the gift card with the text. Fold the short and long end up over the card. Press the folds with your hands. Open the fabric. Remove the gift card. Straight stitch down the fold lines. This stabilizes the text and shapes the sleeve. Repeat the previous step and this step for each gift card sleeve, changing out the stitching thread to match the OlyFun top.

Step Nine

Straight pin around the text section, through both layers, to stabilize the text for embroidery.

Step Ten

Cut a 12″ piece of embroidery floss. Split it in half, with three strands for each half. Thread the three strands through an embroidery needle. Tie a knot at the end.

Step Eleven

The sleeve and embroidery floss should match. Starting on the back, straight stitch around letters, keeping the stitches even. Tie off on the back when the thread gets short, and your finished with the embroidery. Repeat this step for each matching embroidery floss color and sleeve.

  • GIFT CARD SLEEVES 11

Step Twelve

Flip the sleeve to the back. Fold the large section up to the short section stitching line. Straight pin the sides, leaving the top open. Load the sewing machine with matching thread. Straight stitch the sides, along the previous stitching lines. Repeat for each sleeve and matching thread.

  • GIFT CARD SLEEVES 12

Step Thirteen

On the short flap, measure out a 1.25″ buttonhole in the center. You can either sew a traditional buttonhole. Or, since OlyFun doesn’t fray, you can straight stitch a rectangle. Use small scissors to open the buttonhole. The thread should match the sleeve color. Repeat for the other sleeves, making sure the thread matches.

  • GIFT CARD SLEEVES 18

Step Fourteen

Fold the flap down. Use a pencil to mark where the buttonhole touches the sleeve. Open the flap. With the embroidery needle and matching sleeve thread, hand sew a heart button onto that button mark. Repeat for the other buttons and sleeves.

Step Fifteen

When you’ve completely the five gift card sleeve envelopes, they should look similar to mine.
