Colorwork Crochet Hearts Pillow

Categories: Pillow, Crochet

Looking for something to crochet for Valentine’s Day? This is the perfect project. The only stitch you need to know to make this pillow is single crochet. The gray pillow has hearts worked in a tweedy pinkish-purple color to add a fun festive touch. The hearts are made by switching yarn colors for a few stitches at a time. You can either follow a graph to make your pillow or the written pattern.

Instructions

Step One

First things first, you need to gather your supplies. I have a couple of notes about the supplies for this project.

First of all yarn colors, for my gray yarn I used Red Heart with Love in Pewter. That one is easy enough, you can find it just about anywhere. I usually buy mine at either JoAnn or Walmart. Depending on where you buy it the skeins are different sizes, at JoAnn they are big and one should be enough, however Walmart carries smaller skeins and of those you will need 2.

Next the pink yarn, I always like to tell what kind of yarn I used for a project so that people making it can use the same if they want, in this case I knew I wanted a yarn that wasn’t just plain solid, I thought that would help it stand out against the gray, so I dug through my stash and found a tweedy pink color. I finished the pillow using that and then discovered that it has been discontinued. The yarn I used was Red Heart Super Tweed. I looked around and I think some good substitutes would be Red Heart Super Saver pink tones or one of their variegated yarns that has pinks in it, they have a few different ones. Red Heart with Love also has a variegated yarn that has pinks and purples and reds, Also, Vanna’s Choice has a Rose Mist color that I think would work well. Or if you choose you could just go with a solid color.

Last, besides the obvious hook and scissors and stuff, I made a chart for the pillow. I could not figure out how to make the squares small enough to fit on one page so it is two pages long and you will be starting at the bottom, so on the second page. I will also include written instructions so you can choose which way works best for you. If you choose to follow the graph each square equals one single crochet.

Step Two

Now that you have your supplies ready it is time to make the pillow front.

When you change color, when you are on the last stitch of the color you are using start the stitch as normal, insert it into the stitch, pull up a loop, but then rather than finishing the stitch with the old color, grab the new color with your hook and pull it through to finish the stitch.

Also, there are different methods for doing colorwork project like this as far as the way you carry your yarn, some people prefer the clean look of using bobbins, I chose simply to carry my yarn along the back of my project since it was going inside and no one would see it.

When you work a color change always leave your yarn ends hanging on the wrong side, when you are working a wrong side row you will need to pull the yarn to the wrong side before continuing with the next color.
