CHRISTMAS OLYFUN RAG GARLAND

Categories: Decor, Kid Friendly, Oly*Fun, Holiday, Winter

Breaking from the traditional Christmas red and green, I used pink, sea green, neutrals, and metallic OlyFun fabrics to create a rag garland. OlyFun comes in 18 colors and 4 metallics, making customizing this garland easy. Unlike woven fabric, OlyFun doesn’t fray and cuts like paper, making it great for raw edge projects. I made mine for Christmas, but this would be great for any celebration, like birthdays, weddings, proms, baby showers, engagements, anniversaries, other holidays, or even just normal decor. This is a no-sew project that is kid friendly. Older kids and adults can help with the cutting, while younger kids can loop on the strips.

Step One

Using pinking sheers, cut 4 Snow White strips the width of the OlyFun bolt times 4″. Using the pinking sheers, with all the OlyFun colors and metallics, cut many strips the width of the OlyFun bolts time 2″. I always cut more than I think I’ll need. This garland is likely over 100 strips total. I like to fold the OlyFun to make cutting faster. All of the strips should be about the same length.

Step Two

In the 4″ wide white strips, cut 1″ vertical slits in all of the ends, except two. Insert one slitted strip end into the slitted end of another strip. Pull the strip up, and insert the opposite end through the slit. Pull gently until the strips lock together. Repeat for the other strips, making an extra long strip. Tie the last strip ends together, making a big circle of strips.

Step Three

Fold the strip circle in half, staggering the locked ends and knot. Make a double knot about 3″ down from one loop end. Repeat for the other loop end. These will be used to hang later, and prevent the hanging strips from sliding off.

Step Four

Start at the locked strip sections and knot. Fold one short white strip in half. Lay the loop over a locked section. Put the strip ends under the locked section, and up through the loop. Pull tightly, locking the strip in place. Repeat white white strips on the other locked and knot sections. Repeat with the other strip colors, creating a pattern, filling in the white extra long strip.

Step Five

Use nails or temporary hooks to hang the garland.
