Boxy Monkey

Categories: Kid Friendly, Doll, Crochet

Last year I made a set of boxy animals, crocheted, stuffed animals with a rectangular base and boxy shape. Boxy Fox, Boxy Owl, and Boxy Bear. I thought it would be fun to revisit that and make a new set of boxy animals and the first one of this set is a Monkey. He has the same boxy shape as the other animals, a long tail that can have wire put inside if you would like it to be bendy, ears that stick out on the side of his head and a contrasting face with safety eyes. The arms legs and tail are all crocheted into the body, the ears and face are sewn on later. Inside he has a little bag filled with weighted stuffing beads in the base that helps him sit up and then he is filled the rest of the way with Poly-Fil.

Instructions

  • monkey arms legs

Step One

You will begin by making the legs/arms, and tail because they will be attached as the body is crocheted. Legs, arms, and tail are all crocheted in the round without joining each round.

Arms and Legs (make 4):

Round 1: with tan yarn make a magic ring, ch1, 6 sc (6 sc)

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch (12 sc)

Round 3: 3 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next, 3 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next 8 stitches (16 stitches)

Round 4: 1 sc in each stitch (16 sc)

Round 5: sc2tog around (8 sc)

Rounds 6-12: sc around (8 sc)

Step Two

Tail:

With brown yarn begin with magic ring

Round 1: ch 1, 6 sc in mr

Round 2-25: 1 sc in each stitch (6 sc)

If desired add a piece of wire or pipe cleaner into the tail, this may not be the best if you plan on using the monkey with a small child but helps the tail be able to bend and curl however you want. To make it so that the wire doesn’t poke out first bend the end of the wire down so that you have a loop, insert it in the tail, then make another loop at the other end, sticking out of the tail enough that it goes slightly into the body (about an inch or a little less)

  • legs and tail attached
  • attached arms

Step Three

Body

The is made by first crocheting a rectangle and then crocheting around that, I joined each round on the body.

with brown yarn

ch 17

Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across

Row 2-5: ch 1, turn, sc in each stitch across
*now the base is finished and you will begin working in the round, legs will be attached in the first round

Round 1: ch 1, turn 90 degrees so you will be working along the side, 5 sc evenly along side, attach the first leg in the first 4 stitches on the front by sc through both layers of the leg and the base of the body, 1 sc in the next 8 stitches, attach second leg in the last 4 stitches of the front, work 5 sc along next side, work 16 sc across back, join to first sc (42 sc)

Round 2: ch 1, sc in the first 33 stitches, attach the tail in the next 3 sc, sc in next 6 stitches, join to first sc (42 sc)

Rounds 3-11: ch 1, sc in each stitch around, join to first sc (42 sc)

Round 12: ch 1, sc in first 3 stitches, join arm in the next 4 sc, sc in next 16, join arm in next 4 sc, sc in next 16 (42 sc)

Rounds 13-24: 1 sc in each stitch around (42 sc)

Step Four

Round 3: 2 sc in first stitch, sc in next 5 stitches, 2 sc in next, sc in next 2, 2 sc in next, sc in next 5, 2 sc in next, sc in next 2 (22 sc)

Row 8: turn, hdc 5 times in 2nd stitch, skip 1, slip stitch in next 2 stitches, skip 1, hdc 5 times in next stitch, slip stitch in last stitch, finish off, cut yarn leaving long end for sewing

  • securing safety eyes
  • adding face and eyes

Step Five

Attach face and eyes:

Place the face in the center of the front of the monkey close to the top. Add the safety eyes through both layers, the face and the body, secure inside the body. Stuff the inside of the nose section and sew around the face.

Step Six

Ears:

make 2 with tan yarn

Round 1: in magic ring, ch 1, 6 sc (6 sc)

Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch (12 sc)

Round 3: [2 sc in next stitch, 1 sc in next] repeat around (18 sc)

Round 4-6: sc around (I felt my ears were a little too long after I sewed them on so you may want to only do 2 rows of sc instead of 3) (18 sc)

Round 7: [1 sc, sc2tog] repeat around (12 sc)

Sew ears to the side of the head

Step Seven

To make fabric pouch:

Fold fabric scrap in half so that it is 5″ x 3 1/2″. Sew around 2 sides. Fill with poly pellets and sew opening closed.

  • crocheted monkey

Step Eight

Finish your monkey by first, inserting the fabric pouch in the bottom and then using Poly-Fil to stuff the rest of the bear. Single crochet across the top of the head, through both layers to close, or if you prefer you can sew the top closed. Add stitches to make the nose if desired.
