Black, White, and Gold Valentine's Day Pillow

Categories: Decor, Pillow

I recently saw a Valentine’s Day pillow that was black and white striped with a heart on the front and I thought it looked kind of like a more grown up, modern take on Valentine’s Day decor. I thought it would be pretty easy to replicate. I didn’t have any fabric that was wide black and white stripes but I did have some black fabric and some white fabric so I cut some strips and pieced them together. I think the pillow I saw had a pink or red heart but I happened to have some glittery gold heat transfer vinyl on hand so I thought I would use that. I liked the way the gold looked with the black and white. I think that this pillow would work for a lot more than just Valentine’s decor, it would be cute in a girls room or even in a master bedroom. And even better, it is a really quick and easy project.

Instructions

  • striped vinyl pillow supplies

Step One

Start by cutting out all of the pieces you will need.

From black fabric cut:

4- 16 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ strips
2- 16 1/2″ x 11 1/2″ rectangles

From white fabric cut:

4- 16 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ strips

From a piece of paper (I just used a piece of printer paper) cut a large heart shape. I just folded it in half and cut it as big as I could fit on the paper. My heart was about 9″ across the widest part and about 8″ tall. Trace the heart on the vinyl and cut out. Alternatively, if you have a cutting machine you can use that to cut out your heart.

Step Two

Sew the black and white strips together with a 1/4″ seam allowance, alternating colors. Press all of your seams towards the black strips.

  • patchwork stripes

Step Three

Place the striped square on the fusible fleece so that the wrong side of your square is on the fusible side. Iron to fuse together. I added the fusible fleece just to give a little extra sturdiness to the pillow front since the fabrics I used were just regular cotton fabric, without the fusible fleece the pillow front seemed a little thin.

Trim any excess fleece from around the edges.

  • gold vinyl heart

Step Four

Center your vinyl heart on the striped square, cover with a cloth and press. Let cool for a few minutes and peel of the shiny plastic on top of the vinyl.

Step Five

Prepare the back flaps by sewing a narrow hem in one long side of each rectangle.

Step Six

Pin the back flaps to the pillow front, right sides together and with the hemmed edges overlapped in the middle. Sew all the way around the outside of the pillow.

Step Seven

Turn pillow right side out and add insert.
