It really doesn’t get much easier than a pillow that only needs one piece of fabric. These one-piece pillows use a simple velcro closure and can be used in any season depending on your choice of fabric. I have found that the best way to get snug plump is to make the cover about 1″ smaller than the size of the pillow, so that’s what we’ll do this project.

What you need to make this project

Materials: Weather Soft™ Indoor/Outdoor Pillow 18″ x 18″

Supplies: 1/2 yard fabric; 1/2 yard sew-on velcro; Coordinating Thread; Rotary Cutting Mat and Cutter or Scissors; Sewing Machine

Instructions

Step One

Gather your supplies.

From your fabric cut a rectangle that measures 18″ x 39″ Cut your velcro to a length of 17 inches and separate. (If you are making covers for a 16″ pillow, you would want to cut a 16″ x 35″ rectangle and otherwise follow the same directions.)

Step Two

At each of the 18″ ends of your fabric, fold your fabric over by 1″.

Then fold over again by 1″ to make a 1″ hem with no raw edge showing. Stitch as pictured.

Step Three

Stitch the rough side of the velcro to the back side of one of your end hems. Leave 1/2 inch free on each end of the velcro.

Step Four

Stitch the soft side of the velcro to the front of the opposite hem, leaving 1/2 inch of fabric free on each end of the velcro.

Step Five

With RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER match the velcro together and center the velcro in the rectangle you make. (Note, if it works better with the print on your fabric, your cover will also work well if the velcro is off center.)

Step Six

Using a 1/2 inch seam allowance, stitch the two open sides of your pillow cover closed. You may want to clip the corners to get crisper corners when you turn your pillow right side out.
