Meet the Maker: Jennifer Long of Sew A Story

Hello, friends!

My name is Jennifer Long, and I’m an Early Childhood Educator turned fabric designer for Riley Blake Designs and the founder of Sew A Story. Thank you so much to Fairfield for inviting me to share a little of my creative journey with you.

Looking back, I think my love of sewing and storytelling began long before I ever sat behind a sewing machine.

As a young ballet dancer, one of my favorite places was the costume wardrobe. I was fascinated watching flat pieces of fabric become beautiful costumes that transformed dancers into princesses, woodland fairies, and storybook characters. Around that same time, my grandmother owned a sewing and knitting shop, and I loved wandering through the aisles surrounded by colorful fabrics, yarns, patterns, and notions.

Those experiences planted a seed that stayed with me for years. They showed me that fabric could do so much more than create something beautiful. It could tell a story.

Years later, I became an Early Childhood Educator, where I spent more than a decade helping children and families learn through stories, creativity, and play. I saw firsthand how deeply children connect with imaginative experiences, and although I didn’t know it at the time, those years were preparing me for what would eventually become Sew A Story.

Everything changed when my own children were little.

As someone who has always loved storytelling and handmade, I wanted my children to have a story doll they could truly see themselves in. At the time, I couldn’t quite find what I was looking for, so I decided to design and sew one for each of them myself.

They were only two and three years old.

I absolutely loved making those dolls. Choosing the fabrics, bringing each little personality to life, and watching them slowly become characters was such a joyful experience. But what I wasn’t prepared for was what happened after I gave them to my children.

Those dolls became part of our family.

My children treated them differently than any other toy they owned. They weren’t tossed into the toy box at the end of the day. They were tucked into bed each night, carried on adventures, included in story time, and loved in a way that completely surprised me.

That was the moment I realized there was something incredibly special about a handmade doll.

Children can feel the love that goes into something created just for them.

That little experience eventually became Sew A Story, where every pattern begins with one simple question:

“What story will this project help someone tell?”

Today, I design dolls, quilts, fabric collections, and machine embroidery projects, but dolls continue to hold a special place in my heart. There is something magical about watching a doll come to life. It begins as a few simple pieces of fabric, and before long it has its own personality, its own story, and its own place in someone’s home.

One of my greatest joys is watching someone make their very first doll. So many people begin feeling nervous, convinced they could never create something like that. Then they turn the doll right side out, begin stuffing it, add the face, and suddenly they cannot stop smiling. Watching their confidence grow is every bit as rewarding as finishing one of my own projects.

Of course, every heirloom begins with quality materials. Fairfield products have been part of my sewing room for decades because I know I can count on them every time. Whether I’m creating a soft doll for little hands to cuddle or shaping tiny details that give each character its personality, having dependable materials allows me to focus on the creative process instead of worrying about the finished result.

Over the last two decades, I have had the privilege of refining the art of doll making through both sewing and machine embroidery. Along the way, I’ve taught thousands of makers around the world, partnered with manufacturers to bring dolls to life, and designed fabric collections and printed panels inspired by the characters and stories I love.

But through all of that, one thing has never changed.

I still believe that a handmade doll is so much more than fabric, thread, and stuffing. It becomes a trusted friend, a treasured keepsake, a story waiting to be told, and often a memory that is lovingly passed from one generation to the next.

That simple belief continues to inspire every doll, every pattern, and every collection I create.
