October, which will be here before you know it, is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. An alumni association I belong to is holding a benefit and asked me if I would do some favor bags to hold some small swag items we are giving away to benefit attendees. I have to make between 50-75 so I knew I would have to make them simple. Here is how I made these simple burlap favor bags.
Burlap Favor Bags
Materials needed
- Burlap
- Fairfield Processing Corp. Oly*Fun in Bubblegum
- Fairfield Processing Corp Crafter’s Choice Poly-fil
- Handmade text fabric
- Embellishments of choice, jeweled brads
- Sewing machine and thread
- Rotary cutter and cutting mat
- Scissors
- Fabric glue
- Heavy duty hole punch
I started out by cutting my pieces from the Oly*Fun. I cut two 3″ x 10″ strips for the cuff and handles. Then I cut out heart shapes. I used a die cutter but you can also free hand a pattern since most of us can draw a heart! Tiny fabric embellishments were created from the handmade text fabric I sewed the edges of the text fabric and left some threads hanging to create a scrappy look.
Next, I used the rotary cutter and mat to cut two 5 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ rectangles from the burlap. When working with burlap, it is often helpful to sew the edges with a zig zag stitch to prevent it from unraveling while you are working with it. Next I pinned the heart to one side of one the burlap rectangles and sewed the edges 1/4″ from the edges, leaving a small opening for lightly stuffing with the poly-fil.
Once the heart is sewn to the front of the bag, match the right sides together and sew all edges using a 1/2″ seam allowance except the top. I created the cuff using one of the oly*fun strips. I folded the edges in and sewed them down to make a cuff. Then I added it to the bag using fabric glue.
The burlap favor bags are easy to embellish with almost anything. I used sparkly brads and the handmade text fabric pieces. I created the handles in the same way as the cuffs, using brads and a heavy duty hole punch to attach them.
So, there you have it, simple Burlap Favor Bags. Easy to make in multiples and cute!
