Biography


Debra calls herself a "CEO, Creative Eternal Optimist!" She views the world as full of creative possibilities. With her first sewing machine at the age of five and fabric pieces from her mom's sewing scraps her sewing and designing adventure began. Both her parents were artistic and resourceful. Her mom took reclaimed coats and curtains to make clothing for the whole family. As a teenager Debra was making all her own clothes with her own brand of unique style, especially the yellow plaid pantsuit with matching hat!

 

As a young mother she sewed everything for her daughter along with many matching Mom and daughter outfits. Later as a single Mom of a baby and nine year old her love of creating became a business. After several years of doing local craft shows and teaching she launched her own pattern line "Homespun Treasures", attended international tradeshows and had distributors in seventeen countries. Debra joined SCD, the Society of Craft Designers and branched out her design work into several areas of expertise. It was her whimsical characters in felt, fur and fleece that caught the eye of many editors. Since then she has authored four How-to Books for KP books, a division of F+W Media. Debra also writes a regular column for Creative Homearts Magazine “Make it Green". As a licensed designer Debra has developed patterns with the McCall Butterick pattern company and with her partner in PQexpressions designed two lines of quilting fabrics. Debra also designs for major manufacturers, Dow and Expo International, craft publications like Bead Unique, Crafts 'n Things, Country Marketplace, Create & Decorate, Creative Homearts and PaperCrafts, Pack of Fun.

 

Awards include UNB in Saint John Yearbook renamed the Quartonian in 2007 in recognition of her being the first editor. CHA 2008 Trade Show “Exhibiting with Excellence: Award in License & Design and 2008 International Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship Award. She holds membership in the Chamber of Commerce, Women in Business, CHA Designer Member and Trend Team.

 

Her greatest success has been though raising two wonderful young women who have followed their own dreams. Debra was able to work from home and follow her creative journey. Two feathery friends adorn this so soft bamboo batt stocking made for Fairfield by Debra Quartermain. She expressed her talent using Nature-Fil Bamboo Batting, repurposing an old wool sweater and using buttons for accents.
