Biography
Billie McCray lives on American Beach in Fernandina Beach, Florida. She started her craft hobby as "I'll show my husband". When they built their new house, he wanted a piece of a famous fiber artist's work to hang in the house. Billie knew that artwork made by Memphis Wood, A deceased fiber artist whose work they admired, would be unavailable to purchase and they couldn't afford it . (Memphis Wood's work is now part of a permanent collection of the Jacksonville Museum of Contemporary Art.) Billie decided that she could do what Memphis did, and proceeded to design and make a wall hanging of rope. Her husband was ecstatic when he saw it and now calls her "Nashvillebill". Billie continued with other crafts and after perfecting each craft she proceeded to another challenge. She now makes birds, bears, dolls, quilts and many other items that she finds to be a challenge and fun. She shows her work at museums, quilt shows, craft shows and schools. Billie makes items, especially birds for fun, and believes that "crafting" has medicinal effects without any "side effects".
One of Billie's birds can be seen on the
